The toxic white foam is back on the Yamuna river in Delhi. It's triggered the usual debate on pollution of the river and ways to tackle it. It's in the same polluted waters that devotees are taking a dip as a part of the rituals during Chhath puja completely unaware of the water posing a major threat to their heath. Dumping of untreated sewage, industrial effluents and garbage waste are some of the causes of its pollution. The government is trying to control pollution through steps like the interceptor channel on three key drains: Najafgarh, Barapullah and Shahdara which are yet to be implemented. Tackling problems at source and building greater consciousness and awareness to protect our rivers on all fronts will be the key to making our rivers healthy says Manu Bhatnagar, principal director INTACH National Heritage.
