Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut sparked a nationwide debate following her 'real freedom' remark during the Times Now summit. The 'Queen' actress has been on the receiving end of criticism in the wake of her controversial comments. Politicians including Nawab Malik, BJP MP Varun Gandhi, Anand Sharma, DCW chief Swati Maliwal, singer-composer Vishal Dadlani and many others have strongly condemned Ranaut's statement that 'India got 'bheek' in 1947 and the real freedom came in 2014'. A while ago Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar called her a 'nachanewali' and said, 'If some dancer girl levels allegations against Mahatma Gandhi, I do not consider it worthy of response'. And now Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar have reacted to Kangana's 'bheek' remark. Tushar Gandhi responded to Kangana through an article and said, 'Her comment demeans the courage and sacrifice of thousands of freedom fighters.' He further added, 'Those who allege that Gandhians only turn the other cheek and are, therefore, cowards cannot understand the courage required to be so brave. They are incapable of understanding such heroism. But we must not forget, to turn the other cheek is not the act of a coward. It takes a lot of courage, and Indians of that time displayed it in abundance.' Veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar took to his social media handle to slam Kangana and wrote, 'It is totally understand(able). Why would all those who had nothing to do with freedom movement feel bad if some(one) calls our freedom just a 'bheek'.' Earlier, a Congress leader took the legal route and filed a complaint against the actress at Jaipur's Vaishali Nagar police station for her 'India's freedom bheek' remark. According to reports, the complainant has stated that Kangana's comment is an insult to freedom fighters and the constitution of India. The police are now investigating the matter. Meanwhile, despite massive criticism, Kangana Ranaut is still firm on her statement and also said that she would return her Padma Shri and apologise if anyone could prove her wrong.
