The country's first Oscar winner, costume designer Bhanu Athaiya died at her home on Thursday after a prolonged illness at 91. Her daughter Radhika confirmed that she passed away peacefully in her sleep. She further added that eight years ago, her mother was diagnosed with a tumour in her brain and for the last three years, she was bedridden. The veteran's last rites took place at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Mumbai. Bhanu won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Lord Richard Attenborough's 'Gandhi' in 1983.
