For Kanpurites Dussehra celebrations are incomplete without worshipping Ravan. Kanpur has the only temple of Ravan in all of North India which was constructed in 1868. This temple opens on the day of Dussehra and after worshipping Ravan, the temple is closed for the entire year. It is considered that Ravan, who was also a very learned brahmin, was born on the day of Dussehra and in order to celebrate his birthday, Kanpurites pray to him. Devotees offer ridged gourd (taroi), flowers and mustard oil deepak to Ravan for blessings and good luck.
