Urban areas in Maharashtra are likely to face severe shortage of milk as dairy farmers have gone on a strike. Farmers dumped milk on the road at Khed in Ahmednagar district as a mark of protest. Farmers are protesting drop in milk prices and reduction in procurement by cooperatives. Farmer organisations led by Raju Shetti's Swabhimaani Shetkari Sanghatana are demanding higher prices for milk and a Rs 5 per litre direct subsidy. owever, officials say they have enough buffer stock of milk that will last at least 2 days. Organised dairy players too say they they will keep up the supply of milk to the city.
