Ashadi Ekadashi, also called Maha-ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi and Devpodhi Ekadashi, is observed on the 11th lunar day of the Hindu month of Ashada, which falls on July 23 this year. On the day, a huge yatra or religious procession of pilgrims known as Pandharpur Ashadi Ekadasi Waari Yatra culminates at the temple town of Pandharpur in Solapur district in south Maharashtra. Pandharpur is main centre of worship of the deity Vitthal, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This year's festival was marked by controversy -- Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis skipped the annual puja at the Lord Vitthal Temple in Pandharpur due to protest threats by Marathas and instead performed rituals at his home in Mumbai.
