Approximately 6,00,000 people live in the Deonar slums of Mumba's Shivaji Nagar. Every morning, these slum residents have to wait in long queues in order to relieve themselves. According to a recent survey conducted by an NGO, there is only one functional toilet seat per 145 residents of Shivaji Nagar. Each resident has to wait for an average of 35-40 minutes in the queue before their turn. Open defecation is a big problem in the region, as not everybody can wait for their turn each time. Contractors are reluctant to build public toilets as the neighbourhood sits on reclaimed marshy land that belongs to the collector or falls under the coastal regulation zone, which further demands permissions from the authorities.
