500 Indian star tortoises seized at Vijayawada railway station

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized around 500 Indian star tortoises from a train passenger at Vijayawada Railway Station on July 30. The accused was onboard Navjeevan Express and was on his way to deliver the reptiles in Ahmedabad. A DRI press release said, the Indian star tortoises are a vulnerable and endangered species according to the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. Acting on specific intelligence, the DRI officials stopped the passenger while he was about to leave for Ahmedabad from Vijayawada. The tortoises were seized and handed over to the Vijayawada forest range officer.
