For a majority of the several dozen budding cricketers gathered at the Siri Fort Sports Complex recently, Gary Kirsten was merely a name. They knew he was coming to scout and oversee their coaching sessions and given they were at Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy, he must be a big name. The excited lot were at the sidelines – the parents of these kids, most of whom remembered Kirsten not just from his days as the Indian coach but also when the former South African opener dominated bowling attacks around the globe. Amrit Pal Singh’s, whose son Harsh was in the under-10 group at the camp, told us, “I told my son that Kirtsen is the man who coached India when Dhoni’s team won the World Cup. He wouldn’t understand how much in awe of him my friends and I were in the ‘90s when he opened the batting for South Africa.”
