After surprise discovery of medieval coins, ASI to dig deep at Delhi's Khirki Masjid
After a surprise discovery of 254 medieval era coins in the Khirki Masjid on September 2018, the Archaeological Survey of India is now digging deep at the site in hope of finding more such treasures. The coins were found during a routine conservation job at the 14th century mosque. The ASI has decided to dig to a depth of 2 feet all around the monument for a detailed scientific exploration. The ASI will use a station survey around the mosque to pinpoint areas for exploration where the ground level is detected to be uneven or higher than usual. Meanwhile, the coins found in a clay pot will be chemically cleaned and studied by the epigraphy department. Preliminary study suggests that the coins belong to the era of Sher Shah Suri and his successors.
