16 days after the Koyambedu market COVID-19 cluster emerged in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has finally broken his silence. On Wednesday, in a televised address, the CM put the blame squarely on the vendors of the market and said that despite repeated requests and advice from the government, they were not willing to shift out of Koyambedu, stating that such a move would affect their business badly. This resulted in a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in Chennai and other districts of the state, the CM claimed. Koyambedu market, opened in 1996 in Chennai, is one of Asia's biggest markets and it was recently shut and shifted to Thirumazhisai, in the outskirts of Chennai, by the administration after several people who were working at the market and their contacts tested positive for coronavirus. According to Tamil Nadu health department officials, more than 2500 COVID-19 cases in the state are linked to the Koyambedu cluster.
