To protect the environment from the ill-effects of cracker smoke, the UT department of environment and NGO Yuvsatta started a ‘Green Diwali, Healthy Diwali’ campaign from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, here on Monday. Making people aware of the benefits of green Diwali, the NGO gave away 1,000-odd earthen lamps and rangoli colour packets on the occasion. It presented a street play to educate people about all the pollutants in firecrackers. UT director of environment Debendra Dalai said: “Metallic salts are put in crackers to produce various shades of sparkle. Calcium chloride, sodium nitrate, barium chloride, and copper chloride are the toxic substances going into it. That’s a dangerous form of entertainment.” Yuvsatta coordinator Pramod Sharma motivated students to play safe on Diwali, while environmentalist Kulbhushan Kanwar called for distributing green plants on the occasion.
