Kid cries when told Barack Obama has to go, video goes viral
Sometimes it takes a child to articulate how most people in a nation might be feeling. Four-year-old Christopher, of Las Vegas, has become an internet sensation of sorts after his mother posted a video of him crying inconsolably when told that Obama has to go and that a new president must be picked.
Well, it’s been a rough election season so far in the US. While most Republicans and a lot of Americans are not done tearing their hair out, and Democrats settle into the smugness of a most probable victory, many are unhappy over the fact that Barack Obama has to leave the White House.
Christopher’s mother, Anilu Daniela Maldonado, tweeted the video that has since been ‘liked’ close to 50,000 times and retweeted over 35,000 times.
Here’s the video of Christopher’s unhappiness with his coming winter of discontent:
Here is the conversation that brought the Las Vegan kid to tears:
Anilu: Baby, it’s the rules. We have to pick a new President.
Christopher: No, it’s not. It’s not.
Anilu: Baby, I am sorry. We have to pick a new president, okay.
Christopher: No.
Anilu: We have to pick a new president. Obama has to go.
Christopher: No.
Anilu: We have to. It’s the rules.
Christopher: No (starts crying). Mom, I don’t want to pick a new president. (cries)
Anilu: Baby, Obama has to go.
Christopher: (crying harder) No!
Anilu: We have to pick a new president. It could be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.
Christopher: (crying) No. I like Obama better.
Christopher cries harder when told the new president is going to be either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, clearly an astute reflection of a vast number of Americans. The 2016 election is one of a kind, with Trump and Clinton said to hold the most unfavourable views on any candidates in history.
Unknown to Christopher however is the fitting irony of the video itself. Anilu and her family are of Mexican origin and still have strong family ties in Mexico – the very country Donald Trump has promised to wall off from the US.
It is pretty unlikely Christopher joins many Americans in yet not understanding what it is the president does. But the video does reflect a general sense of nostalgia and longing now that the Obamas are set to move out of the White House.
As Obama himself said in an interview with comedian Jerry Seinfeld, kids love him because of his big ears and his name that’s "fun to say".
