US President-elect Donald Trump said

NATO

was obsolete because it had not defended against terror attacks, but that the military alliance was still very important to him, The Times of London reported.

"I took such heat, when I said NATO was obsolete,"

Trump

told the newspaper in an interview.

"It’s obsolete because it wasn’t taking care of terror. I took a lot of heat for two days. And then they started saying Trump is right," Trump said.

Trump added that many NATO members were not paying their fair share for

US protection

“A lot of these countries aren’t paying what they’re supposed to be paying, which I think is very unfair to the United States," Trump said.

"With that being said, NATO is very important to me. There’s five countries that are paying what they’re supposed to. Five. It’s not much," Trump said.

NATO positioned and modelled as anti - Soviet alliance is long dead, because today''s Russia can overpower NATO with its sheer fire power, and modernised weapon systems. But again it isn''t about NATO - Russia conflict. NATO needs reforms in terms of its funding and budgeting which should account for war on terror across broken/failed states, and dedicated anti-terror weapon systems. If NATO doesn''t play mischief similar to Ukraine, Putin is trustworthy enough for fairplay to maintain Peace and Tranquillity in Europe. NATO needs active participation in more anti-terror missions. US''s NATO funding came as part of Marshal plan to rebuild Europe post war 2, due to rising Soviets, but since Soviet demise nothing change in NATO, given EU expanded formidably. So budgeting ought get restructured.
