WASHINGTON: Characterizing themselves as "law and order candidates from the law and order party," Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump introduced his vice-presidential running mate Mike Pence to voters saying they will bring back respect for law and order again in the United States and the world.
In a rambling speech, Trump blamed the "Obama-Clinton" combination for all the misery and turmoil across the world, from the rise of IS to the turmoil in France and Turkey, while boasting of how he had made all the right geo-political and economic calls and prognosis even as a businessman, even though critics said he lacked political experience.
While Trump was holding forth at the time this report was being written, pundits were poring over his running mate’s many positions that conflicted with the Trump view: Among them his criticism of Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the US, his backing of the Iraq War (which Trump opposed), and his support for trade deals such as NAFTA and TPP that Trump opposes.
But Pence quickly began aligning his views with his putative boss, saying in television interviews that he is "very supportive of Donald Trump's call to temporarily suspend immigration from countries where terrorists influence and impact represents a threat to the United States." With a little more clarity than Trump has demonstrated, he said any change in US policy would be temporary and intended to give the government a chance to evaluate and vet prospective immigrants from terror-torn parts of the globe.
Pence’s quick about turn fed into chatter from critics that he would be Trump’s handmaiden, even as scores of internet memes erupted over social media about the Trump-Pence campaign logos unveiled on Friday. One logo showed the T in the Trump’s name penetrating the P in Pence’s name, leading to many ribald comments about how exactly the ticket would pan out.
