UP Transformation Dialogues: Livestock and fisheries drive change in rural economy
Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a transformation in its agricultural sector, emerging as a powerhouse in livestock and fisheries. Improved fodder management, better veterinary care, and extensive vaccination drives have helped the state boost productivity and farmer incomes.
The state has maintained its position among leading milk production states, producing 414 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25, contributing 16.2% of India’s total output. Productivity per animal has also improved: hybrid cows now yield 8.53 kg per day, desi cows 4.18 kg, and buffaloes 5.32 kg, surpassing the national average.
Poultry farming is gaining traction as a sustainable income source. Uttar Pradesh’s share in national egg production has risen from 2.6% in 2016-17 to an estimated 4.5% in 2024-25. The government aims to increase this to 10% within the next five years.
The fisheries sector also recorded “unparalleled progress” with inland fish production growing from 662 thousand metric tonnes in 2018-19 to 1,330 thousand metric tonnes in 2024-25, with an average annual growth rate of 11.5%. The state won the First Prize for excellence in inland fisheries in 2022-23, reflecting its growing national prominence.
Experts say the combined growth in milk and fish production is acting as a “double engine” for rural prosperity, strengthening food security and providing new opportunities for farmers across the state.
