NEW DELHI: After the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala is set to give another boost to the country’s sports with P Chidambaram announcing the setting up of a Rs 250-crore hi-tech institute for training coaches.
The grand Old Moti Bagh Palace, home for the NIS, which has been churning out sporting champions for the past decade, will now be a hotbed for some international-level coaching.
The announcement came after a special committee submitted a report regarding the same. “A special committee formed by the sports ministry had analysed the urgent need for the NIS to improve sports performance. We had requested for the speedy release and implementation of all projects,” said LS Ranawat, executive director of NIS. The move was welcomed gratuitously in the sporting world.
B S Sandhu, national boxing coach, felt the coaches need international-level training so that they can impart the same to their wards. “I welcome this move. Indian coaches, especially those who are related to Olympic sports, also need training so that they can share their experiences with sportspersons,” said Sandhu. Wrestling coach Satpal, who has mentored Olympics medallists Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt, gave the move a thumbs-up as he opined that this would reduce India’s dependence on foreign coaches.
