NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that if measures to trim the fiscal deficit work and problems with environment and forest clearances sorted out, India can get back to the 8% growth path in two to three years. Singh said the FM has given every ministry “enough to chew on” and the mood of the country is that there is no time to lose. “It must get its act together to accelerate the tempo of growth,” he said.
Earlier, Singh heard the Budget attentively, scribbling some three-four lines on a few loose sheets in front of him while wife Gursharan Kaur was in the speaker’s gallery sitting next to
Chidambaram’s family members.
Congress chief
Sonia Gandhi did not offer any post-Budget reactions, but heard the FM attentively joining the ruling party MPs in applauding Chidambaram.
Singh said the newly-constituted Cabinet Committee on Investment will grapple with problems of green, forest and land clearances, emphasizing that roadblocks will be dealt with.
