The finance minister announced the government's intention to set up 839 FM radio channels in 294 cities. The auction for phase III of FM radio, cleared by the Cabinet in 2011, had come under a cloud after the 2G spectrum scam.
The e-auction is now intended to take place in 2013-2014 and will provide all cities with a population of over 1 lakh with private radio services.
Expectations are that this will generate an extra revenue of Rs 1500 crore.
Existing operators and new players have been waiting for the bid to expand. Among the new provisions is content-sharing between stations and the permission to broadcast AIR news which will bring down the costs.
