This season of Survivor has brought its fair share of emotional twists and gut-wrenching betrayals, but for contestant David Kinne, the loss went beyond the island — it hit his personal life too.
Kinne, 39, was eliminated from Season 48 during the Wednesday, April 23 episode in a vote that left him feeling “blindsided.” The former castaway opened up to Entertainment Weekly following his exit, sharing not just the heartbreak of being voted out, but also the fallout waiting for him back home.
Earlier in the season, Kinne revealed that his girlfriend had given him an ultimatum: come home with the prize money, or don’t come home at all. Sadly, it seems she meant it. In his post-show interview, Kinne confirmed that his relationship ended just “a few weeks after she found out I didn’t win.”
“She was out the door,” Kinne said. “It hurt, but maybe that was the clarity I needed.”
Despite the heartbreak, Kinne’s post-Survivor life is turning a corner. He shared that he’s now in a new relationship — and this time, the connection is based on something deeper than a million-dollar prize.
“She’s phenomenal. I’m truly feeling blessed right now,” he said, speaking of his new girlfriend, whom he called “the most incredible woman.” In fact, he even admitted, “I’m almost glad I didn’t win a million dollars.”
Reflecting on his elimination, Kinne described the moment as a painful surprise. “There are so many emotions going through that moment, and the worst part about it is I truly believe they got it wrong,” he said. “I was doing everything I could to keep my alliance intact. I was the ride or die kind of guy. I was going to go to the end with them.”
Though his game ended earlier than he’d hoped, David Kinne walks away with more than he expected — not in money, but in lessons, growth, and perhaps, a new beginning worth far more.
