Seiya Nayagi narrates his past to Nandini. Born Rathnavel Bhoopathi he saw Parvathy (Nandini’s mother) on a hunt and immediately decided to lead his life with her. However, their family and the community belonging to the Naga lineage disapproved of the marriage of Rathnavel and Parvathi. While Parvathi was pregnant with Nandini and
Ganga
, they decided to settle in Avarangudi village to stay out of dangers.
The village was plagued with some unknown epidemic by the time they reached there. Many people died and lot of people were sick. The villagers kept the deceased and diseased in a local temple, shut it and prayed for some divine intervention in saving them.
Pregnant Parvathi Amma and Rathnavel Bhoopathi (presently Seiya Nayagi) volunteered to treat the diseased. Parvathi Amma tried her best to save the patients. But since there was no immediate improvement, villagers criticized the couple.
