Kushbu Sundar and Kamal Haasan mourn the demise of Pt Birju Maharaj

Actress-TV personality Kushbu Sundar and actor-BB Tamil host Kamal Haasan on Monday joined the world in condoling the death of Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj who passed away today (January 17) at New Delhi’s Saket Hospital after suffering from a heart attack.

Actress-TV personality Kushbu Sundar and actor-BB Tamil host Kamal Haasan on Monday joined the world in condoling the death of Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj who passed away today (January 17) at New Delhi’s Saket Hospital after suffering from a heart attack. While Kamal looks back at training with him for ‘Vishwaroopam’, Kushbu tweeted, ‘An era has come to an end’.


In the tweet, Kusbhu shared her condolence message and said, "We have lost a stalwart in Pandit Birju Maharaj. He was an institution, an inspiration".
Taking to Twitter, Kamal Haasan posted a picture of Birju Maharaj training him and actress Andrea Jerimaiah for 'Unnai Kaanaadhu...', the famous song from 'Vishwaroopam'.

The dance sequence won Birju Maharaj the National Film Award for choreography in 2012.
In his tweet Kamal wrote, "The incomparable dance legend Pandit Birju Maharaj has passed away. Like an Ekalavya, I learnt a lot from him by observing him from a distance for many years. I learnt a lot from close quarters with Viswaroopam. A legend who dedicated his life to music and dance, I am not myself today as a result of being unable to see you."
In one of his speeches earlier, too, the actor talked about the experience of training under Pandit Birju Maharaj.
Pandit Birju Maharaj, who had been diagnosed with a kidney disease recently and put on dialysis. A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award, Maharaj ji was known for having made the Lucknow gharana of Kathak renowned throughout the world.
