and Siski, is still the favourite of TV audiences. Kanwaljit Singh, the small screen’s big hero, is now featuring in Filmy’s new comedy show Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai! in which he is paired with Neena Gupta after a long time. So, what kind of on-screen chemistry do they share considering that they have done a hit serial like Saans? “Neena and I have done so much work together that now we are very comfortable with each other. When two compatible people work together, it brings out natural and relaxed performances,” says he. In Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai! Kanwaljit is playing the character of Inderjit Abhimanyu Singh who dreams of becoming an IAS officer but ends up as a librarian. Has anything like that happened to him in real life? “Actually, I never wanted to become an actor. I am from Saharanpur and I just wanted to go out and see the world. So, I joined NDA, even Merchant Navy for a while, and then I was selected for an acting course in FTII. So, my life is just an accident — just like the characters in Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai! who don’t stop dreaming even though they know that their dreams can’t be realised,” informs he.Kanwaljit has a serious image. So, doesn’t playing a comic character go against his image? “Yeah, I have a very serious image. It’s because most of the work I have done is serious stuff. Of course, I also did Family No.1 which was a comedy. Now, I want to do both serious and comedy stuff. In this serial, my character is very identifiable, and there isn’t comedy for comedy’s sake,” says he. Now that many old hit films are being remade, what about a remake of the popular serial Buniyaad? “Actually, Ramesh Sippy had tried to remake Buniyaad, but it didn’t work. But, if they make such landmark serials in a nice manner, it will definitely work,” he explains. And would he like to work in the new version of Buniyaad? “Yes, I would love to work in it. Buniyaad was one of the landmark serials. It will be interesting to see what happens to the characters,” says Kanwaljit. Why haven’t we seen him on the big screen after 15 Park Avenue? “I am very keen on doing cinema. I have just done a film called Mummyji with Kirron Kher. But, I would like to do only good cinema — be it commercial, off-beat or a multiplex film. I would also like to work with young directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and Om Prakash Mehra.” What about his dream role? “It’s my dream to play a psychopath,” he informs. And, with the new generation of directors keen on experimenting with a gamut of characters, it is sooner than later that his dream might be realised.
