Shark Radhika Gupta gets candid about her journey with Shark Tank India, reveals, 'I am not half as brutal as I appear on the show'
Radhika Gupta, CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Funds, made her reality show debut on Shark Tank India Season 3. Radhika was well-known on the show for being forthright. However, she claims she is not as vicious as she appears on the show. Radhika spoke with Kareena Kapoor on her Mirchi Plus show What Women Want about why she acts tough on Shark Tank India.
Talking about her journey, Radhika shared, “I am not half as brutal as I appear on Shark Tank. My profession is finance and it is a male dominated sector. But at the core, I am deeply emotional. I come from an ordinary middle class family and my family never had a corporate background. My mom was a teacher and dad was in the government. I was studious but didn’t know what to do in life.”
Former shark further quipped, “I was lucky to crack a finance gig. I struggled with a lot of failure on campus. I got rejected by multiple companies before getting a job even though I was a very good student. It happened because I was extremely low on confidence. I was extremely insecure about the way I look and then I finally managed to get a job, and found my way into the world of finance.”
Unlike other entrepreneurs, Radhika Gupta admits that she was never fascinated by finance, but it all occurred to her by chance. “My career was more like an arranged marriage. I didn’t know what to do with my life. I found a career, and then I learnt to fall in love with it.”
Radhika had her own set of problems in the male-dominated finance profession. She faced double the hurdles because she was not only a woman, but also fairly young to be a CEO. Radhika said, “It is actually twin challenges. It has both a women's angle to it and back then I was 33. People trust people with grey hair when they have to hand over their money to them, I struggled with that. I started to wear a saree in an attempt to look older so that people will take me seriously.”
However, these were Radhika Gupta's first obstacles. Her brilliance eventually spoke for itself, and her clients came to trust her. “But over time, when people see your work, they throw gender and age out of the window, but it has taken me some time. There are still moments of insecurity. But I am better now.”
