Best remembered as Maharani (transgender) from Sadak, he has scared us every time he appeared on screen. And never for once, could we stop fearing the man, considering the number of rapes and murders the characters he has played have committed in his career, which spans over almost two decades. And now he is back to the medium he couldn’t be a part of for a while.
The veteran for the first time will play a full-fledged role in a Hindi soap after doing cameos in Raaj Se Swaraj and Shyam Benegal’s Discovery of India. In a way this can be termed as his debut on Hindi TV. He will essay Rudrabhada in an upcoming historical, Shobhaa Somnath Ki. Talking about his character, Sadashiv says, “Oh! now that’s what I call a tailor-made role. The makers mailed me the script and the role sounded promising. I knew I had to play this character that epitomises all things vile and vicious in the story.” He has done a couple of shows on Marathi shows, so why the decision to enter Hindi soaps so delayed? “I was busy with films.
I was getting interesting offers, but kept turning them down due to my prior commitments.” Television is infamous for typecasting actors and more so, if it’s a historical show (Arun Govil couldn’t get rid of the image of Lord Ram he played and many such examples). Doesn’t he fear this? “This show goes beyond a regular historical show. The sheer canvas is so large and as slick as a film. Besides, it’s too late in my career to worry about being typecast. There is a certain perception people have already made of
Sadashiv Amrapurkar over the years, which is not going to change substantially with just one role,” claims the actor. He may not be following TV but his favourite show currently is Pavitra Rishta. “Apart from Pavitra..., I like watching interview-based shows. They tell you a lot about a person and I like studying people.” Let’s wait and watch how his show pans out
