Television actress Rukhsar Rehman is part of two popular prime-time shows, and plays a grey character in one and a positive, headstrong character in another. On balancing the two roles, she says, “As an actor it’s not very difficult to balance the roles, but as a human being it becomes very difficult. You have to make sure that the gestures you choose for one character don’t overlap with the other.
So, I sometimes give my roles some attributes in my head to make it easier for myself.”

There’s a lot of hard work involved, but TV keeps you busy. You know you have to get up in the morning, go to work and act, which is the staple diet of an actor. But if you’re doing a film, unless you’re super-duper busy, you can’t be working every day. TV for me is amazing, it’s given me name. I do theatre also, but people recognize me in a small town in Ireland, in Edinburgh in Scotland because of my shows. It is so heart-warming that people watch TV and connect with my characters, and one thing I’ve noticed is that when I was not doing TV and people used to recognize me for my films, they used to be happy. But now, when they recognize me for my TV work, people meet me with a lot more warmth for some reason. They become familiar with you, I guess, seeing you on TV every day, so they’re less formal in person,
bachche ko godi mein de denge, things like that,” she says.
The actress has always been lauded for her sense of style on screen. She says, “It was conscious, to keep my characters looking realistic. Nowadays every woman knows how to dress up or do makeup. So, yeah, it was conscious. Like in
Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, when I am in a satin nightie, I make sure my lipstick is very subtle and there’s no jewellery.”
