Rohin Joshi on storytelling beyond saas-bahu drama: Authenticity is our strength
At a time when television competes with bite-sized digital content, Rohin Joshi believes authenticity is the real game-changer for shows like Ganga Mai Ki Betiyaan.
“The TV audience is appreciating shows that move beyond the regular saas-bahu drama template,” Rohin says. “Our show is rooted in a believable small-town world. That authenticity makes people emotionally invest in the characters.”
According to him, the layered narrative structure plays a major role in retaining viewer interest. “There are multiple storylines running simultaneously. The audience isn’t locked into just one track. While the core is dramatic, it isn’t confined to heightened drama. There’s comedy, romance, and action woven in.”
Rohin believes the long-term nature of television storytelling demands sensitivity. “Audiences get deeply attached to characters because they see them daily. You never quite know when they might start drifting if something feels off. Unlike a limited series, you’re constantly aware of that long-term connection.”
On the growing dominance of OTT platforms, he sees creative expansion rather than competition. “OTT has changed content consumption completely. People can watch what they want, when they want. It has also encouraged more realistic storytelling. As actors, we can explore subtle performances, silences, and internal moments.”
However, he notes that the industry is witnessing rapid shifts. “Attention spans have reduced significantly. Content that constantly stimulates viewers is being consumed more. It’s difficult to hold the shorts and reels audience with a slow-burning narrative. Micro-dramas might soon become mainstream.”
Despite digital disruption, Rohin remains fond of traditional formats. “I still enjoy watching films and shows in a 16:9 format or in theatres. There’s something immersive about it.”
On a personal front, the show’s popularity has brought unexpected moments. “Being recognised is still new and slightly awkward. I’ve met people in the most random places who ask for pictures. When viewers from abroad tell me they follow the show, it feels overwhelming in the best way.”
As for the future, Rohin prefers to stay grounded. “I think I’ll truly understand the professional impact when I move to my next project. For now, I’m focused on doing justice to Murli and enjoying this journey.”
