doweshowbellyad=0; Krithika Sengal (TOI Photo)A crop of newcomers are ruling eyeballs on small screen. AT finds out more...What do Priyamvada SS (Meri Doli Tere Angna), Rati Pandey (Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai), Sunaina Gulia (Dil Mil Gaye), Divyanka Tripathi (Banoo Main Teri Dulhan), Krithika Sengal, Wasna Ahmed (Kasauti Zindagi Kay), Praneeta Sahu, Shalini Chandran (Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi), Parakh Madan (Saathi re) and Zalak Thakkar (Saarthi) have in common? All of them are girls next door playing lead roles in prime time soap sagas on small screen.
And none of them have any acting credentials to boast of.
What makes television producers repose faith in someone who’s never faced a camera to pull off a show on her shoulders? Nivedita Basu, creative head of a production house, says, “There’s no risk at all as newcomers go through lot of tests before they are finalised for any role. The most important thing is that they should look good and suit the role.”Actor Rati Pandey says acting happened to her “By fluke.” A rank newcomer, Rati was selected for the role after a few auditions. “I have never acted before. It just happened and now I am into it,” she says. Acting happened by “default” for Ashima Bhalla who plays the lead in Meri Awaaz Ko Mil Gayee Roshni. “I had never thought of an acting career and it just came as a surprise. I used to get lot of modelling offers, and one day I was called for a look test and got finalised for this role.” Romesh Kalra, who has directed serials like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, Maayka and Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan, confesses that new actresses are hired also because they don’t have to be paid much. “Both directors and actors have to put in a lot of hard work in the beginning. Established actors also have date problems and we can’t cast them.” As long as soap-box’s mint fresh faces spin TRP magic, more won’t be enough.
