Actress Mahika Sharma recalls her memories of celebrating Mahalaya in Kolkata. The actress is currently shifted to Mumbai to pursue her acting dreams. She is known for featuring in shows like Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai, Ramayan, F.I.R. among others.
Mahalaya, according to the Hindu calendar, marks the day when Goddess Durga is believed to start her journey for the mortal world on Earth.
It is an auspicious occasion in Durga Puja. This year, Mahalaya is being observed today, i.e. October 2.
Mahika said, "Passing down from generation to generation like a priceless treasure, the tradition of Mahalaya is a sheer gift that stays in every Bong's heart till the last breath and maybe beyond. The famous voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra increases the excitement of Durga Pujo, there's a tradition that almost every bong, goes out to collect Night Jasmine (Shiuli Flower). And while collecting them greeting each other Subho Mahalaya, is a surreal feeling."
She continued, "In this world of uncertainty, loneliness and hurdles when your heart races with those familiar tracks of Mahalaya and reminds you of your lovely times spent with family, it reignites the trust that you are not alone. Your belief in the universe is reaffirmed, and you can feel the presence of your loved ones in a subtle sweet way. It gives you the strength to survive alone and be happy."
Talking about sharing the festival here in Mumbai, The actress who won the beauty pageant title, Miss Teen Northeast shared, "Currently I'm not in Kolkata, but missing the city of joy for sure. To celebrate and enjoy the festival, I woke up early and tuned in to the Mahalaya track on YouTube seamlessly, and within no time I felt their presence. The aura of my family encompassed my home and I felt their touch and the comfort of their warm hug. It is at that time when it hit me, that parents don't forcefully teach us these rituals just to imbibe tradition, culture and values in us; it is to create as many memories as possible to return to and cherish them later. It makes sailing through life a little easy."
