Mahhi Vij on former husband Jay Bhanushali: He’s my best friend right now, my family
Actress Mahhi Vij has talked about navigating a challenging phase of her divorce with former husband Jay Bhanushali, whom she’s called her ‘best friend’, and also about the unconditional support she received from her father during that time.
Rajeev Khandelwal, who is hosting Tum Ho Naa Ghar Ki Superstar, asked Mahhi: “There must have been a phase in your life when many things did not go according to your plans, and your father stood by your side during that time. Even today, he continues to support you.”
“Later, there may have been moments in your personal life when things did not turn out the way you had hoped or expected. During those difficult times, your father's support must have meant a great deal to you. How did he help you deal with those situations?
Sharing how her father stood by her without judgment, Mahhi says, “Actually, I think he never questioned me about anything. He has always said, ‘Whatever decision you make, we are with you. You just need to be happy in life.’ As for us, Jay is my best friend right now, and he is my family.”
“My father also visits the house, sits with Jay over tea, and they spend time together. He comes around often, and we all share a very good relationship. I’m grateful that there is no bitterness between anyone. We are still connected like a family and continue to be there for one another.”
She added: When all of this was happening, you know what it feels like? You just don’t want anyone to question you. You want people to simply sit beside you quietly—and that’s exactly what my father did. He would sit silently without asking questions like, ‘Why are you doing this?’, ‘This will happen,’ or ‘This is wrong.’”
Reflecting on societal expectations and the strength her father gave her, Mahhi shared: “I see this happening a lot. I had recently posted a video on Instagram about it. Girls are often told that no matter what happens, they should just keep adjusting and carrying on. I’m not saying that my situation was bad; I’m saying that this is what many women are told.”
“And when a woman returns to her parents’ home, there’s often a feeling of worry because of society and relatives. Obviously, people from the older generation tend to think it will bring shame or make them ‘hang their heads.’ In fact, it’s usually relatives who make the most taunts and comments.”
Seeing that environment, what touched Mahhi was that her father never questioned her even once.
Mahhi said: “He simply made me feel that he was there for me. He showed me, ‘I’m here. Don’t worry. Whether you stay there or not, your father will always stand by your side.’”
Moved by her words, said: “This is what should be said to all those so-called ‘wise’ people: ‘My father doesn’t question me, so who are you to question me?’ That’s where the answer ends. It begins and ends with your father. ‘Here is my father, and here is my answer.’”
