Kitu Gidwani : I’ll never do television again, unless something interesting comes up

Who can forget her portrayal in the 1986 TV series, 'Air Hostess'! Kitu Gidwani, who was also part of shows like '

Swabhimaan

' and 'Junoon', is known for pulling off challenging and strong female characters on TV, over the past few decades.

Ask her what she feels about the content and characters that define television today, and the seasoned actress says, “I don’t watch much TV anymore. I guess there are some strong female characters on the small screen, the saas-bahu characters, for example, though I don’t agree with them. The kind of roles that we all did, up till 2000, were different and varied. We weren’t stuck in the kitchen and didn’t have to wear the pallu. So, I guess things have regressed.”

Kitu goes on to reminisce about the kind of content that was available on TV, back in the day. “There were some great shows back then. While you had

on one side, there was also Govind Nihlani’s Tamas. We saw Shanti, Navneet Nishan playing Tara and

Priya Tendulkar

playing Rajani. We don’t see that kind of content on TV anymore,” she rues.

She was recently seen in a cameo on the show, '

Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai

'. Explaining what keeps her away from the small screen, Kitu says, “I refuse most TV shows that are offered to me. I haven’t done one in 15 years. My part in 'Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai' was just a cameo for three months. That’s when I decided that I’ll never do television again, unless something interesting comes up.”

Meanwhile, the actress will be seen as a street hooker in an upcoming film. “I had never played a character like that and every actor likes to be challenged. Since this was an unusual role, I grabbed it. It was challenging, but once you lose your inhibitions, it’s easy to play,” she signs off.
