Jamuniya's Anupama Solanki: TV shows need stronger female leads, not just harassment stories
Actress Anupama Solanki, known for her roles in Yeh Hai Mohabbatien, Nath- Krishna Aur Gauri Ki Kahani, and Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai, is set to appear in the upcoming show Jamuniya. She believes television needs to portray stronger women instead of repeatedly showing them as victims of family oppression.
Anupama questions the repetitive nature of TV content, saying, “Why are we still making outdated TV shows? The same things have been happening for the last 25 years. Most stories revolve around saas-bahu drama or female protagonists being harassed by family members. It’s very sad. We should be motivating women to focus on their careers instead of only portraying them as housewives. I feel we are going backward day by day.”
She acknowledges that only a handful of shows truly make an impact in the entertainment industry, citing The Kapil Sharma Show, Anupamaa, Mangal Lakshmi, and Kundali Bhagya as examples.
Anupama takes pride in being part of socially relevant projects. “My last show, Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai, was against dahej pratha (dowry system), and my new show Jamuniya is equally inspiring. It challenges society’s obsession with fair skin. People treat individuals differently based on complexion, which is completely wrong. I chose this show because its message is empowering for all women.”
She further explains, “Even Lord Krishna was not fair-skinned, yet we have not learned anything. Jamuniya teaches audiences that one should never judge a book by its cover.”
Anupama acknowledges the positive impact of social media in providing equal opportunities for women. However, she also warns about its dangers. “Social media is a powerful platform. It has no gender bias, and women can use it to create something revolutionary. But some influencers misuse it, and media outlets encourage this behavior. The paps culture promotes them, which is unfortunate.”
She references the recent controversy involving Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahabadia, saying, “Ranveer was an idol for many, but one wrong statement damaged his entire career. Social media can build you up, but one mistake can destroy everything. That’s why it’s important to choose words wisely.”
