Rubbishing recent reports of her quitting television, Smirti Irani declares that from now on she will carry her own dictaphone during interviews. “Production is a serious 24-hour business. All I said was that right now, due to my time constraints, I cannot produce and they assumed I was quitting TV!” says Smriti. There was a time when this telly bahu was ruling the roost, but she’s nowhere to be seen now.
“Yes, I am almost pre-historic when it comes to TV. It has been really long,” she laughs. “Honestly, I have never pursued production houses. I always wait for work. And since I have been too busy with my political career, I really do not have time for much,” she says.
But she is looking forward to her film debut in the next year, which she calls a ‘multi-lingual year’. “I have done a Bengali film Amrita, where I have the title role and my co-star is Victor Banerjee. There’s also Jai Bolo Telangana, a Telugu film by N Shankar. I am overwhelmed that this legendary filmmaker chose me for this role.” Smriti’s also busy with her Gujarati play Garv Thi Kaho Ame Gujarati Chiye, that has already done 50 shows. “I have been given a lot of different opportunities in life and I have done well. God has been very kind,” she says humbly.
And politics and acting apart, there’s family that’s her top priority always. “It’s a busy year ahead. I am waiting for my daughter’s Navjot... it is huge event for us all,” she says. Here’s wishing Smriti a wonderful 2011!
