Hemant Kher: It’s desperation that makes celebs go overboard on social media

Social media has often been criticised for spreading negativity and toxicity. However, Hemant Kher doesn’t think so. The actor-writer-filmmaker, Kher believes that like everything else, social media, too, has its pros and cons. He says, “Social media is a great medium for actors to interact with their audience and get direct feedback. Also, it’s an excellent platform to promote one’s work as well as look for opportunities. Artistes can use it to their advantage.”

Having said that, Hemant doesn’t think popularity on social media will translate into a thriving career. “In the long run, what matters is an actor’s talent, not his/her social media following. In fact, a talented actor can be popular, but it is not necessary that a popular actor on social media is talented,” he shares. While the actor is appreciative of the benefits of social media, he is careful not to go overboard unlike some celebs. “I think that’s desperation. I don’t do that and neither do I agree with it. For me, such social media celebrities are annoying, I skip their posts,” he says.

Hemant also warns against getting addicted to social media. “Social media can become an addiction, if one gets too attached to it. The key is to understand the difference between real and virtual. Also I find it strange when people force me to accept their friend requests and keep asking me to respond to their posts."
