Exclusive - Ranndeep R Rai: Acting is my true passion and I haven’t taken any formal training, everything I know, I’ve learned on the job

Actor Ranndeep R Rai, who has appeared in shows like Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai, Balika Vadhu 2, Meet: Badlegi Duniya Ki Reet, Diya Aur Baati Hum, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Emotional Atyachar, and Pavitra Rishta 2.0 and is currently seen in Rajan Shahi's Anupamaa as Mohit, says that he has always been passionate about acting. The actor adds that although he hasn't got any training, he loves exploring more in his craft.

“Acting is my true passion, and interestingly, I haven’t taken any formal training, everything I know, I’ve learned on the job. When I watch myself on screen, I do feel a sense of satisfaction and pride. But during the actual performance, there's always a thought in the back of my mind that it could’ve been better. I think most actors relate to that feeling and even after the final take, you wonder if you could’ve pushed a little more. That said, when I see the final telecast, I’m usually content with how it comes across,” he says.

Ask him what he loves about the way he performs, and he says, “I genuinely enjoy performing intense, emotional scenes because that’s where I feel most in my element. I also love doing romantic and angry sequences. One thing I appreciate about myself is when I manage to deliver in a single take as that’s when the performance feels most natural. However, if a second take is required, I do tend to get a little nervous. That’s something I’d definitely like to work on — maintaining the same confidence and energy in every take.”

As for inspiration, he says, “I think copying someone’s style doesn’t do justice to your own individuality, and today’s audience is very perceptive as they can easily spot imitation. I always try to bring my own flavor and nuances to a character. Yes, I do watch other actors’ performances for inspiration, but never with the intention to replicate. It’s more about learning and evolving, not mimicking.”

Ask him what qualities should an actor possess, and he says, “Firstly, you must stay true to your craft. Secondly, punctuality and discipline go a long way. And thirdly, you should be willing to take on any kind of role with complete honesty. It’s crucial to understand the emotions behind each line and deliver them with authenticity.”

Talking about his biggest critic, he says and his entire family makes sure to give him feedback. “They’re very honest with their feedback, whether it's about my dialogue delivery or even something like my hair and makeup. They don’t sugarcoat things, and I appreciate that. Whenever I go home, I make it a point to ask them what they liked and what they didn’t about my performance. Their insights really help me grow,” he says.

On asking whether he reads the feedback from his fans, Ranndeep says, “I try to read as many as I can, though the shoot schedule makes it difficult sometimes. But I truly enjoy fan edits and the creative content fans make and it’s incredibly touching. I’m grateful to have such a talented and supportive fan base, and I genuinely thank them for all the love they send my way.”
