Surabhi Das who was adored for her debut show Nima Denzongpa is currently playing Esha in Pandya Store. The actress exclusively spoke to ETimes TV about an artist's struggles in the TV Industry. Surabhi gets candid about her break from TV, the struggle with auditions and more.
A show must at least get 6 months of run
It is actually like a show ki kismat hoti hai, but when the show lasts for just 1 or 3 months it is very sad.
The cast and crew are working so hard, especially in the initial months you are working day and night without any rest. You are continuously shooting and when you come to know that your show is going off-air in just three months. It is very disheartening. I believe a show must at least get 6 months to prove its skill and storyline in front of the viewers. But it is all about the TV show's fate.
The audition process is exhausting for an actor
After each show ends, there is the audition process and you again give auditions and wait for the revert for the role. Then if it doesn't happen somewhere you keep giving auditions for different characters and shows. There are times when the actor also feels exhausted. How long am I supposed to keep auditioning and not get work? If the show works for a year at least then you get that stability.
It is expensive to manage everything
It is so expensive, maintaining yourself, paying rent all of this is an added responsibility and you have to manage it all. When one gets a show there is a sense of security that there is a flow of income and one can plan things accordingly for a year but when the show goes off-air in 3 months or less that gets very troublesome.
Someone told me my Hindi wasn't fluent and I looked old
You are going for auditions every day, you especially get ready for the audition, wear makeup and then there are various reasons to refute the role. At times the reasons just leave me shocked and baffled. When I was auditioning recently, someone told me my Hindi is not fluent, someone told me that I look old. If they had to refuse, they didn't need to give such lame reasons. At times it stays in the actor's mind as how will I improve my skills, already I am on a break so it keeps pinching me.
Many actresses have responsibilities behind taking up characters 10-20 years older
People just see the glitz and glamour of an actress's life. They only see how beautiful she looks wearing all those sarees and heavy jewellery but when one talks to them closely you will realise that they have a lot of responsibilities to fulfill. When someone agrees to play a character who is 10-20 years older then there are many reasons behind it, for someone it would be that they didn't get good roles lately, their financial and family responsibilities, at times even actors think that iske baad kuch achha aa jayega. They all have responsibilities to look after.
Surabhi Das: Nima Denzongpa saved me from the financial struggle in Mumbai
I am glad Pandya Store happened
I didn't manage my break, I am a workaholic and I need to be in front of the camera. I do vlogs and it does pay me well. But until and unless I am not in front of the camera, I don't feel like I am working. So I am glad that Pandya Store happened and I am back on screen.
