Exclusive! One shouldn't look down upon the medium that gave you fame: Sayantani Ghosh on Radhika Madan's recent comment, returning to Alibaba's set and more

A lot has happened in the past few days, In an exclusive conversation with ETimesTV, Alibaba: Dastaan-E-Kabul's Sayantani Ghosh got candid about returning to the old sets, remembering Tunisha Sharma, the recent controversy over Radhika Madan's comment and more. Here's what she had to reveal:

2/9

I didn't sleep that night, I wasn't prepared to go back

We had started shooting sometime back, we were temporarily shooting somewhere but then it was time to come back to the original place as the story and the narration required. When I was asked to come, I didn't sleep that night and I told my husband that I am still not prepared to go back to that set. We had to come here, and obviously on the first day especially and the heaviness is still there. I was feeling very down, feeling very heavy, because it is the space where, you know, we would shoot together. We have memories because when we shifted out temporarily though, you were still feeling sad but the place is different so you don't have memories there. So the shooting process became even by very few percentages, but it was kind of bearable because the change of place helped.

We were waiting to shoot together and make reels

But now to get back to the same space is still very sad because we still have the makeup rooms next to each other. Of course, those make-up rooms are locked, you know, but they are in the same place. So you have memories like in my makeup room, I have memories, I have this wall, with another colour. We were going to make reels there as both of us are fond of dancing and we were waiting for our scenes to happen together. However, Life is about moving on. The show must go on. And it's not easy for the entire unit to go ahead shooting. But like every show has so many lives depending on it, and we are trying to move on. Of course, there is a lot of heaviness and we keep remembering every time we shoot. You can't forget the time, you just kind of get used to it.

With Abhishek Nigam stepping in there is a change to the show

I still haven't shot with him though, but shall be shooting together. There are a lot of changes happening with Abhishek stepping in. A part of me is still not ready to accept what had happened and I still feel sometimes that this all would be a dream and I would wake up. Accepting all of this is still a challenge. All of this came to us as a shock and I hope that we do justice to the show and the new chapter we are entering into. I hope we can pull together, it hasn't ever happened to any show where like in our show, the main leads weren't there suddenly. I just hope people see the intention and hard work behind the show, we are trying to keep the show alive and we as a unit are trying to work it, it is not easy when you are emotionally trying your best to churn out good episodes when you are in a contradicting headspace.

5/9

There have been counselling sessions for all of us

The sets have been freshly painted white and the lights have been changed, they are trying to bring some positive change although we all know that there is sorrow in our hearts. The producers have offered counselling sessions to us and the kids also had counselling sessions. They have also been considerate with the scripts, the kids were not called for the shoot immediately, we started slowly and tried to push coming back. Even at the other set, they tried to keep us at ease. I hope they see that effort from all our end and they shower their love upon us.
6/9

The show could have shut down or taken a pause

That could have been an easy decision with no hero or heroine of the show. It takes more courage to keep it running because there are so many. All of our lives would have changed overnight otherwise it still has changed emotionally. But on top of that, even if the show would have shut, for example, for me, I would have been suddenly without a show, after that what timeline will I get another show, will that happen or not? We are really lucky that the makers and the channel wanted us to continue and gave us a second chance.

Radhika Madan's comment on Television

I genuinely feel that everything in life has its strengths and its challenges. There is nothing like a picture-perfect scenario, I am not saying that there are no areas where we can't improve. Yes, Healthy criticism is acceptable, when it is about improving the working hours and environment, to better the working conditions. That is a very strong and relatable conversation to have but the way she spoke and her attitude was about belittling the Industry. And because even people who were interviewing were laughing, the intention was to look down upon them. I have a problem with that, kindly don't treat TV as a stepping stone in your career. I just feel that's very unfair to this medium. If you want to do movies then straight away begin with movies, do your struggle there. Don't use television, I feel there shouldn't be any demarcation, as artists we need to perform irrespective of the medium.

This whole demarcation and looking down, okay, this is a hierarchy. That is not something that I'm comfortable with. And as we all can witness, the biggest movie stars choose television to come and promote their films. Why? Because that is the reach TV has. It reaches millions of homes. And we've seen the kind of stardom or fame and love that TV artists get. So when you use it as a stop gap arrangement where you begin with TV, you learn and earn. Of course, it's your call if you want to do movies but one should look down upon where you have started and it brought you fame. I would never do that when I get an opportunity. It is just these artists who have begun from TV who look down upon it. It is these people starting from TV who find these problems. There are issues but then if your attitude is about demeaning it then I am very possessive about it and I believe nothing lacks with TV, it deserves the respect and one should show that.

Television has to churn out episodes every day unlike a movie

It is not easy, it is challenging and there are pressures. It is because of the dynamics. We are not doing a movie where there are different stages of production. There is no luxury of time in Television, we have to churn out episodes every day, unlike the movies. With the Tunisha case, had it been a movie we would have paused it, taken a break and then come back. But the show has to go on every day and episodes have to go on air. Against all odds, the unit comes together and does this work. Nobody has asked you at gunpoint to do television, it is your choice and your set of reasons to do it. Of course, one gets tired of the same character but we are doing our best to play the same character for all these years with the same zeal. I think it is more challenging to do Television. I get hurt even more if that disrespect comes from somebody that has begun a career in Television.

Mouni always expresses gratitude to Television

TV stars and not lesser than them in any way. Many viewers also reacted that she isn't lying, it is challenging. I agree with it but the approach is what matters. If you ask me about having better conditions, I would also agree but not with that attitude. Mouni is my dear friend, she also started her career in TV and she expresses gratitude for where she has begun. When you grow big you must become more humble I feel. You kind of own up and accept how it has contributed to your career. Even after Radhika's interview, she also began her career and learnt the basics of acting through TV before entering the films.
