Exclusive - Mummun Dutta on facing financial struggles in Mumbai during her initial days and how her mother helped her; says, "I needed money to pay PG rent…"
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actress Munmun Dutta, known for her acting skills and strong on-screen presence, recently opened up about the beautiful bond she shares with her mother and the invaluable life lessons she has learned from her over the years.
For Munmun Dutta, describing her relationship with her mom in just one word isn’t possible, she shares ,“One word is not enough, it's like a roller coaster. We have love, we have anger. It’s friendly. She is definitely my friend, and I can talk to her about everything that’s going on in my life.”
Growing up in a small town, Munmun says she’s learned some of life’s biggest lessons just by watching her mother, says, “My mom got married very young and spent her whole life raising us and caring for the family. But she always encouraged me to live for myself. She never pressured me to get married. In fact, she always told me to focus on my career, travel, and live my life.” Even when people in her hometown ask about Munmun’s marital status, her mother stands by her choices , saying,”She proudly tells them that I’m not married because I don’t want to be right now and that she supports me completely.”
There’s one quality Munmun truly admires in her mom: her ability to connect with people, she said ,“She’s so friendly. She can become friends with people almost instantly and makes everyone around her feel comfortable. I’m more introverted, but she’s a mix of both. That’s something I really admire and wish I had.”
Her mother’s support hasn’t just been emotional, it's been practical too. Munmun recalls a time early in her career when she was struggling financially in Mumbai, she shares, “I needed money to pay my PG rent and also pay a photographer for my portfolio. My mom gave me money from her own savings, without telling my dad. That money helped me pay rent, get my photos, and start auditioning. That support meant everything.”
One of her most emotional childhood memories also speaks volumes about their bond; “l was in nursery, and my mom was late to pick me up from school. I cried so much seeing other kids leave. When I finally saw her running toward me in a saree, I burst into tears. Later she told me she was busy taking care of my elder brother and had been eating lunch but that moment has stayed with me forever.”
