Following India's independence from the British Raj in 1947, the constitution superseded the Government of India Act of 1935 as the country's governing text, transforming it from a dominion to a republic. The Constituent Assembly of India enacted the constitution on November 26, 1949, and it took effect on January 26, 1950. This date was chosen because the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj (full independence) on this date in 1930.

Srishti Jain, who essays the role of Monisha in Kumkum Bhagya said, “Republic Day takes me back to my school days of flag hoisting, singing patriotic songs, and the excitement of receiving sweets after the ceremony. Those moments gave the day a unique charm. Even now, as an adult, the meaning of Republic Day remains profound. It’s not just another holiday—it’s a day that connects us to our roots and reminds us to honour our Constitution. I remember how we would dress up in special outfits and enjoy tri-coloured customized sweets, which added to the festive spirit. Every year, I celebrate this day with pride and hope for a brighter future for our country. Let’s take this opportunity to value our rights and fulfil our duties as citizens. Happy Republic Day, India!"

Republic Day is extensively celebrated with parades, political speeches, cultural events, and ceremonies, as well as different public and private commemorations of India's history, governance, and traditions.
