Kunwar Amar fondly recalled his childhood in Uttar Pradesh, where Chhath Puja was not only a religious observance but also a cherished family celebration. “Growing up, Chhath was one of the biggest festivals for us. As kids, we were mostly excited about going to the lake or river, dancing around, bringing firecrackers, and eating sweets. We didn’t fully understand the rituals, but it was a joyful time, filled with laughter and festivities,” he shared while talking to Times of India TV exclusively.

Over the years, however, Kunwar’s understanding and connection to Chhath Puja have deepened. Since moving to Mumbai to pursue his career, he has found it difficult to attend the annual celebrations back home. “Being away from my family during Chhath is hard. With each passing year, I realize the spiritual essence of the pooja. It’s deeply rooted in our culture, and the faith our mothers and all the women in our families hold is unbreakable,” he reflected. “Although my brother and father are there to help out, I feel a bit incomplete when I’m not there to take blessings and be part of it.”

For Kunwar, some of the most nostalgic memories of Chhath Puja are tied to food and family traditions. He expressed a special fondness for his favorite fruit, sitafal, and “thekua,” a crunchy, sweet delicacy that his mother makes every year. “Thekua, which we call by its local name in UP, brings back the taste of home and all the warmth that goes with it,” he shared.

Remembering the late Sharda Sinha, Kunwar acknowledged her irreplaceable contribution to Chhath Puja through her soul-stirring songs. “Sharda Sinha ji has been a part of all our lives. Chhath Puja feels incomplete without her voice,” he said. “She was a beautiful artist who devoted her life to celebrating Chhath, and it feels divine that she passed away during this festival. It’s like the goddess she celebrated throughout her life has called her to rest by her side. What a beautiful artist she was. Her songs will live on forever, keeping her legacy alive.”

For Kunwar Amar, Sinha’s music doesn’t just set the tone for Chhath Puja – it strengthens his connection to his roots, reminding him of family, tradition, and the cultural bonds that remain timeless.
