He started his career on TV in 2008 by playing the role of Duryodhan on the show 'Kahaani Hamaaray Mahaabhaarat Ki'. Later, he was also seen on shows like 'Pyaar Kii Ye Ek Kahaani', 'Kasamh Se', 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded' and many more.
Gautam also played a pivotal role in the movie Azhar which casted Emraan Hashmi in the lead role.
