He was so against her shifting base to Mumbai and pursuing a career in acting, that he locked her up inside the house for almost a month.

She shares, “I come from an orthodox family from Kolkata and my father is quite strict. While he wanted me to focus on academics, my passion veered towards theatre and acting. My father was extremely angry about it; he stopped talking to me and even locked me up for a month. After much pleading by me and my mother, he finally allowed me to pursue theatre. Taking that as an opportunity to push my luck, I told him about my desire to go to Mumbai and pursue a career in acting. All hell broke loose, and I had to literally stage a protest in my house, including giving up food. Finally, my father gave in on the condition that I would be granted just two years; I have to be back whether or not I make it.”

It’s been two years in the industry now. So, what’s her plan? “Well, now I am not going back and my dad knows it, too,” she says.

The 27-year-old actress has started off as a mother on Indian television, a medium that’s infamous for typecasting artistes. Does she have any such qualms? “No. I am from theatre and the first thing they teach you is to never look at the length of your role or the part you are playing. It’s all about essaying every character with full conviction, irrespective of what comes your way. I am not choosy as an actor. If I am offered a mother’s role again, I will do it,” she signs off.
