Are men finally making a comeback on television?

Life OK's new show 'May I Come In Madam' is a breath of fresh air
A young man, who has to deal with an overbearing wife and her loud family at home, gets a hot new boss in office. She sets his pulse racing. What ensues is a laugh riot of comic situations that leaves all men (and their wives) laughing in agreement. That’s the story of Life OK’s new show '

What’s interesting is that at a time when tellyland is dominated by saas-bahu sagas, this comedy show is getting popular, especially amongst men. Saajan Agarwal represents the regular Indian man, and his shenanigans both at office and home are a refreshing move forward for Indian television. Also, despite its slightly mischievous title, the show is being telecast at 9.30 pm bang in the middle of prime time and not a late night “for men only” slot.

Producer Sanjay Kohli says, “Men are a highly undeserved audience on Indian TV. They have been reduced to side players or caricatures. We were very keen to do something that would bring them back to television. Luckily, the channel too holds a similar belief.” Says a Life OK spokesperson, “We cater to urban families as a channel and that’s not possible to do if we ignore the men of the house. Our shows have always been different and broken new ground. Our attempt is to offer programming that the entire family can enjoy, men included.”

Well, it’s not that men don’t watch TV. The success of shows like 'Comedy Nights', 'Saavdhan India -India Fights Back', 'Mahabharat', 'Bhabhiji Ghar Pe Hai', 'CID', 'Ashok Samrat' and 'Mahadev', bears testimony to this. But there’s scope for the male viewership to go higher. So will 'May I Come In Madam' help do the trick? Let’s hope so.
