Mariska Hargitay is speaking out against the surprising decision to overturn Harvey Weinstein's 2020 convictions in New York State, which signifies a significant setback in the #MeToo movement. Earlier this year, Hargitay shared her own experience with sexual assault in an essay for PEOPLE, recounting how someone she trusted as a "friend" had assaulted her in her thirties. "I was unable to process it.

I couldn't fathom that it had occurred. That it was even possible. So I buried it," she expressed in January. "I erased it from my story. I now have immense compassion for the part of me that made that decision because it helped me cope. It never happened. Now I respect that part of myself: I did what I needed to do to survive." However, at present, the actress has gained clarity on what transpired.

Earlier this year, Hargitay opened up about her own experience with sexual assault in an essay for PEOPLE, detailing how a man who she considered to be a "friend" had "raped me in my thirties." "I couldn’t process it. I couldn’t believe that it happened. That it could happen. So I cut it out," she wrote in January.


“I removed it from my narrative. I now have so much empathy for the part of me that made that choice because that part got me through it. It never happened. Now I honor that part: I did what I had to do to survive." Now, however, the actress is "able to see clearly what was done to me."
