Judith Chalmers, one of Britain's most beloved television presenters, has passed away at the age of 90. Best known for hosting the long-running travel show 'Wish You Were Here...?', Chalmers had a broadcasting career that spanned more than six decades and took her to destinations all over the world.
Her family confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "After living an extraordinary life that involved over 60 years in broadcasting and countless adventures all over the globe, Judy sadly passed away last night, surrounded by the family she loved so much after suffering with Alzheimer's for some years." They added: "We will miss her greatly, but she leaves behind a giant suitcase of the happiest of memories."
According to ITV News, her health had been declining for some time, and she had become seriously ill in recent weeks, giving her family time to be together with her.
Judith Chalmers' career in broadcasting
Born in Gatley near Manchester, Chalmers began her career at the remarkably young age of 13, when she was chosen to present a radio programme from the city. She made her transition to television in the 1950s before moving to London to become an on-screen announcer. After fronting a number of programmes, she moved into presenting daytime magazine shows, including 'Good Afternoon' and 'Afternoon Plus'. The latter featured among its highlights the first-ever television appearances by Dame Mary Berry, who was then cookery editor of Home and Freezer Digest.
Chalmers also presented 'Come Dancing', fronted events including Miss World, and hosted a daily morning radio show in the early 1990s, as well as presenting programmes including 'Woman's Hour'.
Judith Chalmers and 'Wish You Were Here...?'
Chalmers began presenting the primetime travel show 'Wish You Were Here...?' in 1974, continuing in the role until 2003. The programme gave viewers a snapshot of holiday destinations around the world and became a popular fixture in the schedules for nearly three decades.
A spokesperson for the channel said, "As the host of 'Wish You Were Here...?' for four decades, Judith Chalmers became one of the most beloved faces of British broadcasting. Her indelible contribution to television made Judith a national treasure and a lasting favourite amongst our audience, and we send our deepest sympathies to her family and friends at this very sad time."
Chalmers leaves behind a legacy that stretches across radio and television, and a career that helped define British broadcasting for generations of viewers.
