Jonathan Taylor Thomas absent from Lion King 30th anniversary celebration as he focuses on life beyond acting
When the original cast of The Lion King reunited in July to celebrate the iconic Disney film's 30th anniversary, one notable face was absent: Jonathan Taylor Thomas. The actor, who became a household name in the 1990s through his voice role as young Simba and his starring role on Home Improvement, has largely stayed out of the public eye in recent years. His last public appearance was in 2021 when he was photographed walking his dogs.
Thomas's career began in 1990 at just 9 years old when he appeared on the series The Bradys. He quickly rose to fame, becoming the voice of young Simba in The Lion King, starring in family-friendly films like Man of the House and Tom and Huck, and landing the role of Randy Taylor on Home Improvement.
By the early 2000s, however, Thomas stepped back from acting, leaving Home Improvement early and gradually reducing his onscreen appearances. Instead, Thomas shifted his focus to education, attending prestigious institutions like Harvard, Columbia, and St. Andrew’s University in Scotland.
He later reflected on his academic experience, saying, "To sit in a big library amongst books and students, that was pretty cool. It was a novel experience for me." After returning to Los Angeles, Thomas explored directing, writing scripts, and enjoying his free time. "I watch a lot of movies, I hike, I stay up on shows and theater," he shared at the time, adding that he had "no regrets" about stepping away from acting. Between 2013 and 2015, he made a brief return to television, reuniting with his former Home Improvement co-stars Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson on Allen's series Last Man Standing. In a 2024 interview on the Back to the Best podcast, Richardson mentioned that she still keeps in touch with Thomas but noted that "he's not really interested in acting.
He wants to direct and write." Born on September 8, 1981, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Thomas moved to Sacramento at age 5 with his family. His journey into show business began with modeling and a Burger King commercial when he was 8.
