Gilbert Gottfried, actor and comic's comic, dies at 67
"In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert's honour," his family said in a statement posted on Twitter.
Gottfried was a fiercely independent and intentionally bizarre comedian's comedian, as likely to clear a room with anti-comedy as he was to kill it with his jokes.
"The first comedian I saw who would go on and all the other comics would go in the room to watch," standup comic Colin Quinn said on Twitter.
He first came to national attention with frequent appearances in its early days and with a brief stint in the cast of "Saturday Night Live" in the 1980s.
Gottfried also did frequent voice work for children's television and movies, most famously playing the parrot Iago in "Aladdin".
To a younger generation he's known as the voice of Digit the bird on' "Cyberchase".
Gottfried was particularly fond of doing obscure and dated impressions for as long as he could milk them, including Groucho Marx, Bela Lugosi and Andrew "Dice" Clay.
He would often do those voices as a guest on the Howard Stern show, prompting listeners by the dozens to call in and beg Stern to throw him off.
In his early days at the club the Comedy Store in Hollywood, the managers would have him do his impression of then-little-known Jerry Seinfeld at the end of the night to get rid of lingering patrons.
Gottfried was especially beloved by his fellow comedians and performers.
Jon Stewart said that getting to open for Gottfried was one of the great thrills of his early standup career.
"He could leave you gasping for breath," Stewart tweeted, "just indescribably unusually hilarious."
"I am so sad to read about the passing of Gilbert
Gottfried
," actor Marlee Matlin said on Twitter. "Funny, politically incorrect but a softie on the inside. We met many times; he even pranked me on a plane, replacing my interpreter." (Gottfried bore a close resemblance to Matlin's American Sign Language interpreter Jack Jason.)Gottfried was interviewed by a portal last month following Will Smith's Oscar night slap of Chris Rock. While he took the attack seriously, saying it might imperil other comedians, he couldn't resist wisecracks.
He said that before on stage, he "just had to worry about wearing a mask. Now I have to worry about wearing a football helmet."
He later added: "If Will Smith is reading this, dear God, please don't come to my shows."
The year has already seen the loss of several beloved comedians, including Louie Anderson and Bob Saget.
In January, Gottfried tweeted a picture of the three men together, with the text, "This photo is very sad now. RIP Bob Saget and RIP Louie Anderson. Both good friends that will be missed."
Gottfried was born in Brooklyn, the son of a hardware store owner and a stay-at-home mom. He began doing amateur standup at age 15.
He thought he was getting his big break when he landed a spot on "Saturday Night Live" alongside Eddie Murphy in 1980. But he was given little to do on the show.
He later said a low point was playing the body in a sketch about a funeral. He would last only 12 episodes.
But he would find his own way, doing bits and as a both beloved and hated guest on talk shows.
He had roles in "Beverly Hills Cop II" and the "Problem Child" films and presented bad movies as host of "USA Up All Night" from 1989 to 1998.
And he had recurring voice roles on "Ren and Stimpy," "The Fairly OddParents" and several spin-offs of "Aladdin."
Karan Kundrra, who has turned host for kids dance reality show, Dance Deewane Juniors is quite excited about his new innings. The handsome hunk is a host on the show which has Neetu Kapoor, Nora Fatehi and Marzi Pestonji as judges. Recently, Karan spoke exclusively to ETimes TV and opened up about his journey as a host on Dance Deewane Juniors and Tejasswi's reaction to the promos. He also reacted to reports of Tejasswi and his roka ceremony, buying a new house and schooling paparazzi for girlfriend Tejasswi Prakash. The handsome hunk, who enjoys a humongous fan base after Bigg Boss 15, says he is in a beautiful phase that a performer, an artist can see. Karan further spoke about how he juggles between work and personal life and if there's pressure from family for marriage. (Photo: Instagram)
The show Dance Deewane Juniors is entirely about kids and their talent. For my nephews I was their maamu, I was a part of the family from their infancy to till now. But the kids on the show I am meeting now. My role on the show is not just restricted to announcing their names and going back. It starts from the time when the kids enter the show, till the time they are there, what happens with them on the stage and I am the bridge between the kids and the judges. At the same time I am the link between the parents and the team, the choreographers, the kids. I have to showcase their journey, their hard work, their rehearsals, what they feel. It’s me standing with kids and taking them on to the stage and hoping that they do well. Journeys are going to be like how we get attached with the contestants on Roadies and Bigg Boss. It was a very exciting offer and I was a little nervous whether the audience would like me or not, but I think it’s going pretty fine. (Photo: Instagram)
Neetu ji is one of the warmest people, one of the loveliest people I’ve worked with. When she comes on the show, I just watch her on the monitor and keep smiling. In fact, not just me, everyone keeps smiling looking at her because she is such a warm person. She doesn’t make us feel like she is the legendary superstar, she’s very down to earth and warm. Tejasswi didn’t get excited that much after seeing the promos of my songs, or films as much she got excited after watching the promos of Dance Deewane Juniors. She was the happiest to see this promo and said this is so cute. She said seeing you with kids is like a bliss for me. She is very happy for me. She will be on the channel at 8 pm and I’ll come with my show at 9 pm. Thankfully, we are not doing a fiction show otherwise we would have been competing. It feels nice seeing her love. But isn’t that how it is supposed to be, you should be there for your partner. (Photo: Instagram)
Before Bigg Boss also God has been kind and I’ve had people who have loved us throughout the world. Jinko Humari language bhi nahi Pata, they have loved us after watching our dubbed shows. They have liked me and loved me as an actor, after watching my show, a character, my role as a mentor in Roadies, or my film. But after Bigg Boss I feel my family has become huge. The way the fans care, worry, feel and they have an emotional connection now. Anything happens to me, they feel it. They are connected with us as a family. I am in a very beautiful phase that a performer, an artist can see. I just feel I’ve got an extended family. Both Tejasswi and I are very grateful for it. (Photo: Instagram)
It was a safety concern from my side for my girlfriend. There are people in the paparazzi who I know very well and they follow us everywhere we go and they know us. We know about their families, what they are going through in their lives. From their wife's pregnancy to their coming out with new YT channels we know everything about them. This is our relationship with them. But when I see it could be unsafe for somebody who might enter the house, koi kuch bhi kar sakta hai uss beech mein, so obviously I will have to speak. (Photo: Instagram)
My mother has promised she will be back soon. It was an emotional moment. Usually my mom and dad come and go together but my father has stayed back because I’m doing something for which I need my father’s help a lot. He’s taking care of everything while I am busy shooting for my projects. My mother had to leave but she has promised to come back. It has always been an emotional moment for me when one of my family members leave, be it my nephews or I am coming back after staying with them. We have a family ritual we all go to pick and then see off. Because we live far from each other in different countries, continents. We have been a very close knit family. (Photo: Instagram)
We are still looking for the property. (Photo: Instagram)
I give subtle hints and answer to their queries in thode cryptic way and jinko samjhana hota hai Woh Samajh jaate hai. (Photo: Instagram)
In the COVID times last two years I’ve slept only. Even Bigg Boss was like a vacation because I had ladoo (Tejasswi) with me and I was having a blast inside also. I think it is the right time when you have work you should be grateful for. You know how unpredictable our industry is, our line is, you never know what is going to happen next so when you have work you should just go for it, be respectful about it. Just wake up and reach work. (Photo: Instagram)
