The eighth and final season of

HBO

's award-winning fantasy drama "Game of Thrones" will run six episodes.

The sources have confirmed the

Hollywood Reporter

ahead of the season seven premiere in July.

News first broke in April 2016 that showrunners David Benioff and D B

Weiss

were mulling two shorter final seasons of the

George R R Martin

adaptation.

Several months later, HBO programming president

Casey Bloys

confirmed at the

Television Critics Association

summer press tour that the eighth season would be its last.

The producers are currently writing those final hours while also completing post-production work on the show's seventh season -- which will consist of seven episodes.

HBO is also developing four (possibly five) "GoT" prequel ideas from different writing teams to potentially continue the franchise.

The projects are still early days, none are yet written and there is no certainty that HBO will necessarily greenlight any to series.
