Claire Nielson was a Scottish actress who had risen to fame after her work with comedy legends John Cleese and Prunella Scales in ‘Fawlty Towers’ in 1979. Her episode, titled ‘Waldorf Salad,’ remains as one of the most beloved moments in TV history in the UK. She worked in various theatre productions, TV shows as well as films, and created a name for herself in the industry.



Born on April 8, 1937, in Glasgow, Scotland, Nielsen began her career as an actress in the early 1950s. From working in no-name productions, to starring alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, she had come a long way in her career. She started her career after she landed a space in a famed theatre workshop at the Royal Scottish Academy of Dramatic Art. Some of her best-known roles include ‘The Two Ronnies’, ‘Upstairs Downstairs’, ‘The Dick Emery Show’, ‘Ghost Squad’, and ‘Taggart.’

Beyond acting, she also worked as a theatre director and helped train younger talent for their performances. On the personal front, while the actress kept that part of her life to herself, it was known that she had been married twice. The first time, she was married to Paul Greenwood and later to Dennis Vance.
