Cary Fukunaga won't come back for 'True Detective' season 3

Cary Fukunaga

says he has no plans to come back to helm the season three of the crime drama show, if it happens.

Cary directed the first season of the crime drama show which starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson among others.

While the first season became a rage across the world, the second season, on which Cary was an executive producer, received disappointing reviews.

When asked if he would come back for season 3, Cary said, "I had only signed on to do the first season because I wanted to do a long format, wanted to experiment in that genre. But I don't see myself going back to 'True Detective' anytime soon.

"I feel like I have done the noir. There is no noir currently in my slate so if I ever get that itch again, may be. But not for now," he added.

The 39-year-old director was in conversation with filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, at the ongoing 18th Jio MAMI Mumbai film festival, here.

Cary said he did not witness the frenzy around "True Detective" as he was busy shooting "Beasts of No Nation" in west Africa.

"I am still surprised that so many memes came about it (True Detective). I was lucky in the sense that after that (show) I left to west Africa to shoot 'Beasts of No Nation', so I wasn't around to see the frenzy around the show."

When asked how did the show resonate with such a late audience across the world, he said, "I think we got lucky, it was right time of the year, no other shows were there, no world event was happening that takes your attention away."

Cary said the show's writer Nic Pizzolatto had to tweak the characters little bit once the lead stars came on board.

"Once we cast Mathew and Woody Nic had to rewrite the characters to a certain degree, to fit them. When I came on board, only the first two scripts were written. Even the last three episodes were written while we were shooting."
